About the Program
With Adventures in Handwriting, children are given opportunities to learn, improve and master handwriting through play. Each lesson is created with an easy follow along format that allows children to watch and complete activities independently. However, parents are encouraged to join, as they’ll learn creative ways to incorporate letters, shapes and drawing into their child’s daily routine. An “Adventure Kit,” filled with all of the tools and materials needed to complete the activities for each adventure is available to purchase separately. The adventure kit can be used with all programs.
Adventures in Handwriting is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old, but it’s never too early to too late to start. Each video lesson incorporates 4 essential developmental skills needed for independence and success: fine motor, gross motor, academics and sensory processing. Find the right program for your child according to their age and ability level. Adventures are designed to be repeated until you’re ready to move onto the next lesson. Adventures in Handwriting provides children with an opportunity to build their confidence and learning without even knowing it!
Why I started Adventures in Handwriting
“Mom, I neeeeed to watch something.” Sound familiar? This was a common phrase I heard from my son, no matter how much indoor or outdoor play time he had for the day. I always tried to steer away from screen time, but it was inevitable at some point, the tv or iPad was going to be used. As long as I was finding educational shows and videos to watch, I didn’t mind the occasional break (plus, I needed time to make dinner!)
I wasn’t surprised by the endless amount of information that's available on the Internet. You can learn just about anything! But one thing I couldn’t find, that was an area of my expertise as a pediatric occupational therapist, were videos that taught handwriting! Sure, there were videos with cartoon characters forming letters, but there were limited to no opportunities for children to truly explore, learn and practice their handwriting skills. Handwriting is more than just making lines on a piece of paper. Handwriting is about communicating our thoughts, ideas and creativity.
As an OT and as a mom, I knew the importance of developing strong fine motor skills, independence in handwriting and building a child’s confidence. What better way to do that, than through a child’s natural way to interact with the world, through play. With Adventures in Handwriting, we turn play into an adventure you won’t want to miss.
